Is the answer in the clouds?
Michael at, The Security Catalyst, is asking if the answer is in the clouds. I really don’t want to oversimpify his point, so please check out his post. I read it, as we sometimes work so hard to push new solutions on problems that haven’t really proven themselves, that we create new problems. We often deploy and research complex solutions, and work in a “battlefield” where we never take a step back from shooting, to take stock in what else is going on.
I kind of see his point as being related to that old expression, “you can’t see the forest for the trees”. In the Army, we sometimes called it, “Range Syndrome”. We’d spend so much time thinking about a target, we forget there is a war going on.
I think I have to agree with Michael. I like to see myself as thinking at a CIO-level. While I spend a lot of time “in the weeds” of IT, working on AV solutions, content filtering, firewalls, et. al., I also like to look at the other issues that hurt us in security.
I feel the biggest disserve we do, in IT, is we have more toys than relationships. Building relationships with lines of business, customers, employees, bloggers, insiders, vendors, and others can give us a level of perspective that no appliance can resolve.
Please check out Michael’s article, and join in the discussion.
